Why can't I find a sex therapist that accepts insurance?
We completely understand the challenge of finding a sex therapist who accepts insurance and if you do find a sex therapist who does, they likely have long waiting lists. There are a few reasons why many sex therapists do not accept insurance or participate in network with insurance companies. Each therapist is unique, however, so this is not an exhaustive list.
- Sex and relationship therapy is generally considered "specialty care". We don't agree with this as we think that sex and relationship therapy should be available to all. Health insurance companies are really designed for the minimum of preventative and basic care and don't cover relationship therapy outright and don't cover sexual or relationship diagnoses.
- Health insurance companies require a diagnosis for treatment and many sex therapists don't align with diagnosing sexual behavior as a mental health issue or diagnosis normative behavior as pathological.
- Health insurance companies reimbursement rates are generally low for specialty care and sex and relationship therapists generally have advanced training and certifications that are costly and time consuming to obtain and maintain
- When sex therapists contract with health insurance companies, the health insurance companies can request our records. That means your personal information can be shared with your insurance company. Your privacy is paramount so many sex therapists won't contract with health insurance companies.
